My father died this morning, after a long illness. It was expected. I probably will not be able to post for a couple of days, but I'll be back here as soon as I can.
Perhaps I'll have something to say about long-term care and end of life issues, but unfortunately my family's case is all too common. Anyway, it's good that it's finally over.
Discussion of public health and health care policy, from a public health perspective. The U.S. spends more on medical services than any other country, but we get less for it. Major reasons include lack of universal access, unequal treatment, and underinvestment in public health and social welfare. We will critically examine the economics, politics and sociology of health and illness in the U.S. and the world.
All my condoleances, that is a Frenchism. I took care of my father for 2 years (he was a widow) and he died a year ago. At first, it was a tremendous relief. (He had wanted and welcomed his death and it took much effort on my part to effect it.) I felt light. Our pact had worked, and if there was funerals, tombs, family, whtever to organise....poof! Nothing in comparison. I entertained, drank, partied. I went to...the beach!
ReplyDeleteOne year later, I’m not over my grief. Sometimes I feel it has only just begun. Blindsided, I was, but much later. Each situation is different of course.

ana, my thoughts are with you, too. "blindsided" is the perfect word for how it might hit one later.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry for your loss. My thoughts are with you and your family.
ReplyDeleteMy deepest sympathies to you, cervantes.
ReplyDeleteAloha and my condolences to you and your family. The comments about relief and grief both resonate. After my dad died a relatively smooth death 8 months ago, I was surprised to find myself very depressed for several months. But however you feel, just let yourself feel it. I got a lot out of the local hospice support group. (--Rachel)
ReplyDeleteRemember all the good memories of your dad through these hard times.

I am sorry to hear of the death of your father. May you have good memories of your times with him over the years.
ReplyDeleteI'm so very sorry to read of your loss, cervantes. It leaves such a hole in one's life to lose a parent. But I'm with Kathy: {{{{ cervantes }}}}.
