Josh Marshall states the situation succinctly. The Resident cannot possibly win the election legitimately, and at this point he isn't even trying. Walking out onto a "debate" stage and spewing an endless stream of lies, childish insults, racism, incitement to violence, all while continually shouting over his opponent's allotted time and shouting down the moderator, was not intended to win over any voters. It was intended to sow discord and doubt, civil unrest, and to delegitimize the very idea of democracy.
The fact is he cannot lose the election because he will then lose the legal immunity the office provides him, and he will be exposed to all the world as a criminal con artist, stooge of foreign autocrats, and utter failure as a businessman. Plus, he will be prosecuted and convicted of numerous crimes, as will his children and his son-in-law. Therefore, he will destroy democracy in order to save his own worthless ass. If we let him get away with it. Oh yeah, the Republican party is all-in on the plan.
