Shape of the Earth: Views Differ

A newly elected Republican district chair in Georgia wants to tell you about the most pernicious and widespread conspiracy on, well, earth:

In an interview with David Weiss (AKA “Flat Earth Dave”) and Matt Long on her “Jesus, Guns, and Babies” podcast, Taylor and her guests discussed biblical “evidence” that the Earth is actually flat as a pancake. “The people that defend the globe don’t know anything about the globe,” said Weiss. “If they knew a tenth of what Matt and I know about the globe they would be Flat Earthers.”

“All the globes, everywhere” Taylor said later in the discussion. “I turn on the TV, there’s globes in the background … Everywhere there’s globes. You see them all the time, it’s constant. My children will be like ‘Mama, globe, globe, globe, globe’ — they’re everywhere.”

“That’s what they do, to brainwash,” she added. “For me if it’s not a conspiracy. If it is real, why are you pushing so hard everywhere I go? Every store, you buy a globe, there’s globes everywhere. Every movie, every TV show, news media — why? More and more I’m like, it doesn’t make sense.

It is indeed a mystery why this global (oops) cabal has penetrated so deeply into our society. Here's another: (from The American Prospect)

So what's all this about the debt limit? Very simple. Republicans -- GW Bush and RJ Trump -- cut taxes on wealthy people and corporations, resulting in more than 100% of the deficit. Without those tax cuts, the national debt would be declining right now. But the Republicans in congress are refusing to pay for them. That's the entire story. Not that the editors and reporters at the New York Times understand it.

I'll ask you a question that no liberal Democrat has been able to answer. But you're a smart guy so I have high hopes you will be able to give a definitive answer.

Question: At what percentage are taxes too high? What is that limit?

Well, I don't think there is a definitive answer to the question of "at what percentage are taxes too high?" That would depend on a lot of variables, and it's not just about the total percentage, but how taxation is structured, and how the money is spent. But as you can see, the percentage in Denmark is about twice that in the U.S., and as far as I know they're doing just fine.

LG: I lived in Canada and Spain, and I paid higher taxes than in the U.S. I also made more money and had longer vacations (at least five weeks per year, actually more). I was covered for health insurance and social security; my friend had cancer of the liver during a medical strike so, of course, they operated on him anyway (successfully). That was about 25 years ago and he's fine.

There is no perfect system, but single-payer universal comprehensive health care works. I also had excellent all-around coverage in Canada -- didn't pay for therapy, medication was covered, etc. But it makes sense, because all those big-ass insurance buildings in Hartford, CT and Cleveland and Raleigh and Chicago and Boston and ... are paid for by profit. And executives must have their bonuses and golden parachutes ...

Take that all away and there's a hell of a lot left for We the People! It shouldn't be a for-profit industry. I know people who've worked in healthcare/health insurance and they burn out from the impossibility of maintaining such a system, in which "everybody wants their cut" and millions go without care. It's so inhumane ... but what else would be expect from a slaving country that started out with a genocide?

This country doesn't give a shit about life.
