. . . I have finally surrendered. It is impossible to cook dried beans. I'm sticking with canned from now on. It's sad, but one must bow to necessity.

Fresh dried beans cook fairly fast (60-90 min). No need for soaking. Old dry beans never cook. You need to find out what stores stock good beans. In Berkeley CA, Whole Foods has reliably good dried beans. The Berkeley Bowl and the supermarkets don't.
