I've said it before but I need to keep saying it. The majority -- probably a large majority -- of drugs that appear promising in animal models, Phase 1 or observational studies turn out not to be effective when subjected to larger scale, more rigorous trials. Ivermectin is ineffective against mild Covid-19, which means it's probably not effective against more severe disease. We'll know that soon enough.
That's nothing new, health services researchers have long known it. But we've gotten into a weird place where it's a marker of right wing politics to believe that unproven drugs must work. How this is a political issue eludes me.
