Boston mayor Michelle Wu has announced a vaccine mandate for city workers and for indoor public venues. So, of course, protesters show up at the press conference, drowning out the speakers with shoults and whistles. Leading the protest was Republican candidate for governor Geoff Diehl, who the Globe quotes thusly:
Diehl characterized the requirements as “clear violations of the civil rights of anyone who lives in, works in, or travels to the city” that would “make it even more difficult for Boston’s economy to recover from the pandemic.”
“While I openly acknowledge and share concern over rising case counts in Massachusetts, infringing on citizens’ right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is never an acceptable solution,” the Whitman Republican said.
If you desire life, liberty and happiness, get vaccinated, dipshit. People who live, work in, or travel to the city have to obey the traffic laws, and innumerable other public safety regulations. That protects the lives and happiness of themselves and people around them. Liberty doesn't mean "I get to do whatever I want, even if it harms or kills my neighbors."
But it gets worse. This tale, via Paul Campos, reveals the appalling depths to which the MAGAts have sunk. It's from a physician who was driven out of his profession by them. It doesn't really bear summarizing -- read it. I don't know what can be done about this. These people are immune to facts and reason, and I do not understand what is going on in their heads. But we can't survive this.

I have always taken liberty to mean the judicious excursive of one's rights with respect for community interests. This ain't it.
