Personal news

My father died this morning, after a long illness. It was expected. I probably will not be able to post for a couple of days, but I'll be back here as soon as I can.

Perhaps I'll have something to say about long-term care and end of life issues, but unfortunately my family's case is all too common. Anyway, it's good that it's finally over.

so sorry to hear of your dad's death. this is totally unprofessional, but ((( cervantes ))). thinking of you and your family.

even an expected and inevitable death of a parent brings up so much; maybe not all at once, but as humans, we are primed to remember.

All my condoleances, that is a Frenchism. I took care of my father for 2 years (he was a widow) and he died a year ago. At first, it was a tremendous relief. (He had wanted and welcomed his death and it took much effort on my part to effect it.) I felt light. Our pact had worked, and if there was funerals, tombs, family, whtever to organise....poof! Nothing in comparison. I entertained, drank, partied. I went to...the beach!

One year later, I’m not over my grief. Sometimes I feel it has only just begun. Blindsided, I was, but much later. Each situation is different of course.

ana, my thoughts are with you, too. "blindsided" is the perfect word for how it might hit one later.

Aloha and my condolences to you and your family. The comments about relief and grief both resonate. After my dad died a relatively smooth death 8 months ago, I was surprised to find myself very depressed for several months. But however you feel, just let yourself feel it. I got a lot out of the local hospice support group. (--Rachel)

I'm so very sorry to read of your loss, cervantes. It leaves such a hole in one's life to lose a parent. But I'm with Kathy: {{{{ cervantes }}}}.
